I Hardly Know You – The Story Behind My New Single
Some songs don’t start with a plan.
They don’t begin with a notebook, a songwriting session, or a clear idea of what you want to say.
Sometimes they simply arrive.
My next single, I Hardly Know You, is one of those songs.
It came to me late at night while driving home from a gig. I had just finished a conversation that left me sitting in a strange kind of silence. Nothing was wrong exactly, but something didn’t feel right either. There was a feeling I couldn’t quite put into words, and it stayed with me as I drove.
And then, almost out of nowhere, the song appeared.
The first verse, the chorus, and the melody arrived all at once, as though they had been waiting patiently for the right moment. I remember singing into my phone as I drove, trying not to lose any part of it. There was something so raw and honest about what was coming out that I didn’t want to overthink it.
Over the following days, I kept returning to that recording. I listened back to the words and tried to understand why they had come so strongly and so suddenly. Little by little, I added the remaining verses and shaped the story into what it has become today.
At its heart, I Hardly Know You lives in a space that I think many people will recognise.
It’s about that quiet shift that can happen between two people.
The moment when someone who once felt completely familiar suddenly feels distant.
When conversations change.
When life moves in different directions.
When you find yourself wondering when things became different.
Not every relationship ends dramatically. Sometimes there is no argument, no clear reason, and no defining moment. Sometimes people simply grow, change, and evolve. And while change is a natural part of life, it can still bring a sense of loss.
That feeling became the heart of this song.
Lyrics like:
“We used to be so close, now you’re a million miles away”
and
“Still, I’ll keep a place for you in my heart”
capture that mixture of sadness, confusion, love, and acceptance that can exist all at the same time.
What I love most about songwriting is that a song may begin from a personal experience, but once it’s released, it no longer belongs only to me. Every listener brings their own story to it.
Some people may hear this song and think of a friendship that faded over time.
Others might think of a family member, a partner, or someone they once felt deeply connected to.
For me, the song isn’t really about one specific relationship anymore. It’s about a feeling. A feeling that many of us experience at some point in our lives.
Musically, I Hardly Know You is one of the most intimate recordings I’ve released so far.
The song is built around a fingerpicked acoustic guitar that carries the listener from beginning to end. I wanted the arrangement to feel simple and honest, allowing the lyrics and emotion to sit at the centre.
The vocal performance was also a very conscious choice. The opening verses are sung quietly and closely, almost like a private conversation. As the song progresses, more emotion begins to emerge, building gradually until the final chorus. Rather than aiming for a powerful performance, I wanted to capture vulnerability, reflection, and the feeling of someone trying to make sense of a changing relationship.
In many ways, I Hardly Know You feels like another chapter in the journey that began with my previous releases.
Gossip explored truth, vulnerability, and the stories we tell.
Little Soul was inspired by motherhood and the fierce love we feel for our children.
My Forever celebrated commitment and the promises we make to the people we love.
And now I Hardly Know You explores a different side of connection: what happens when someone who once felt close begins to feel far away.
Although the themes are different, all of these songs are connected by the same thread. They are reflections on relationships, human connection, and the moments that shape us.
I hope that when you hear this song, you find a piece of your own story within it.
I Hardly Know You will be released on 16 July 2026 on all major streaming platforms.
You can pre-save it now, so it lands in your Spotify on release day.
Thank you for being here, for listening, and for supporting my music. It means more than you know.
